Beware of Firefox 2.0.0.5 update

I just upgraded to the latest and greatest Firefox. After the upgrade, the browser wouldn’t restart. After rebooting my computer twice, and uninstalling Firefox completely, I was able to get the upgrade to work. However, it’s been about 2 hours now, and it has crashed on me at least 3 times. Before tonight, it has been months since the last time Firefox crashed. I removed a good bit of my extensions to avoid unnecessary conflicts, but it’s still not quite as smooth as it was. Apparently, I’m not the only one to have trouble with this update. I’d steer clear of it if I were you—I’m sure they’ll have another one coming soon (I’m on Windows, by the way).

If I could get the del.icio.us extension and browser sync in Safari, I think I’d switch. It’s incredibly fast, and I like the way it renders pages. Also, the new Flock seems to be a reasonable alternative these days. I still don’t need all of that extra stuff, but it seems to be less obtrusive than it was before. I’m not a fan of the “my world” page (yes, I know it’s not mandatory), and I was informed today that it does finally have a spell-checker.

“reasonable alternative” – that’s almost nice…

Yeah, almost… lol. Honestly, though, I think the new version is a huge improvement over the last. But for me, I just need an address bar, google search, tabs, delicious extension, and browser sync. And now that I’ve listed them out, even that seems like a lot.

You use Flock primarily—do you think the new version is better than older versions?

Do you happen to have the Google Web Accelerator installed? Apparently that was causing a problem for scoble and when he uninstalled it everything was fine.

To be honest I wasn’t sure about the new version at first, but I am starting to like it. I just have to get through that initial shock of things looking a little different and being moved. However, most of the changes are for the better. But when I go to IE or Firefox I really miss it.

Marcia—Actually, I don’t have web accelerator installed (that was the first thing I checked). And here’s another funny thing that just started after the update… right clicking on a local html file to open with Firefox (or any other browser) results in a “Windows could not locate the file [blah blah blah]” error. It could definitely be a Windows issue, but it has never happened before, and it occurred on my home and work computer(s), after the update.
